For long India's sarkari airline Air India has been struggling hard to regain its lost glory faced with stiff competition from a host of private carriers. In fact, the new year has not been particularly good for the Maharaja with an international flight survey firm rating it the "third worst airline carrier" in the world.

However, there is good news for the beleaguered airline with Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen giving a thumbs-up to the carrier for its service. Sen, who was travelling to London's Heathrow airport from New Delhi this week on Air India flight AI-111 did not forget to let the airline management know of his appreciation for its onboard service. Known for his candid views, the octogenarian left a much needed message for the airline staff before departing.

"Many thanks indeed for wonderful service and great care! I'm most grateful - and also very impressed. Best wishes and warm regards," Sen wrote note in his note of appreciation.

Earlier this week FlightStats, an aviation insights firm had released its list of best and worst performing airline carriers based on their performance records in last one year. Government-run Air India came third in terms of worst On-Time Performance (OTP), ranked just after Israel's carrier El Al and Scandinavian airline IcelandAir. In its survey, the American firm had highlighted issues over cabins, service quality, and flight delays.

On its part, Air India had trashed the survey terming it "fabricated". We totally disagree with the report published by FlightStats about AI. Initially it seems that the report is fabricated so AI management will investigate the report till the end,?? Air India Spokesperson Dhananjay Kumar had said in a statement.
