Pune's Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) has been selected as the first recipient of the Prime Minister's Award for outstanding contribution to the promotion and development of yoga. The institution of the award was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of International Yoga Day.

Nominations were invited through open advertisement by the Ministry of AYUSH, which had developed the guidelines for the awards.

Two committees were constituted - a screening committee (for preliminary evaluation) and an evaluation committee (jury), so that a transparent process was followed while finalizing the awards.

85 nominations were received, and 15 more individuals or organisations were recommended by the screening committee.

The screening committee shortlisted 16 names after detailed discussions and analysis of the contributions of the individuals and institutes.

The Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute has worked to spread yoga internationally over four decades, and has published books on yoga that have been translated into multiple languages.

There are thousands of Iyengar Yoga teachers popularising and propagating yoga across the world.

The institute was established on January 19, 1975, and is dedicated to Ramamani Iyengar, the wife of yoga guru BKS Iyengar. Students from all over the world come here to understand the essence of yoga and learn the values of life.
