Following a brief hiatus from national politics, BJP MP from Agra, Ram Shankar Katheria, who had been removed from the post of Union MoS for HRD by PM Narendra Modi in the previous Cabinet reshuffle, has again surged into limelight by getting nominated as the Chairman of the National SC/ST Commission. The post has been lying vacant since the retirement of the previous chairman PL Poonia last year.

Katheria's removal from the ministerial portfolio had come as a surprise for the people of Agra who had been seeking a more centralised role for the dynamic young MP in the Union government. However, after UP BJP President Keshav Prasad Maurya assumed charge as the state's Deputy Chief Minister, it raised hopes that Katheria might be given the charge of UP BJP unit.

CONGRESS ATTACKS KATHERIA

With his nomination as the Chairman of National SC/ST Commission, Katheria is likely to rise high on the national political scene, although his nomination is being criticised by the Congress. The Congress claims that Katheria has many charges of academic fraud pending against him, including tampering with his own graduate and post-graduate mark sheets to obtain a teaching job in the Dr BR Ambedkar University.
