Rajini mania: Kabali crosses Rs 210-crore mark over the weekend

Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malay versions on Friday, managed to cross the Rs 100-crore mark within India in its first three days.

Superstar Rajinikanth proved he has lost none of his box-office clout after all these years when Kabali, the 65-year-old phenomenon's latest film, romped home with a Rs 210-crore opening weekend worldwide on release this past weekend.

"#Kabali Shatters Opening Weekend Records, grosses over Rs 200 Crores WW (worldwide), [sic]," trade analysts Andhra Box Office confirmed on Twitter.

Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malay versions on Friday, managed to cross the Rs 100-crore mark within India in its first three days. On twitter, trade analyst Ramesh B. confirmed that domestic business has been the best in Rajini's home turf Tamil Nadu, where the film saw a three-day gross of around Rs 45 crore.

The Telugu prints in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have raked in Rs 28 crore. Karnataka is an important market for Rajini, and the film managed Rs 17 crore in that state. Business in Kerala has been around Rs 10 crore. Hindi, Tamil and Telugu prints have together done a business of around Rs 23 crore in rest of India in the opening weekend.

JULY 22: KABALI DAY!

Kabali opened on July 22 after being shifted from the Eid weekend to avert a clash with Salman Khan's Sultan. Although the film did not open on a festive weekend, certain offices in Chennai and Bengaluru declared Friday a holiday because staff had en masse called in sick to catch a first-day show of their matinee idol's latest release. Twitter was abuzz with the joke that July 22 ought to be named as Kabali Day.

RAJINI'S GLOBAL POPULARITY

The film's brilliant show in the overseas market proves Rajini's global popularity continues unabated. Abroad, Kabali has opened best the US, Canada, France, Japan and Malaysia. While the weekend has been exceptional, trade experts feel the film has to hold steady all through the first week if it must cross the Rs 300-crore mark(all figures according to trade estimates).
