With Rajinikanth, Stalin in attendance at DMK event, Kamal Haasan says Tamil Nadu witnessing new era

Speaking at the 75th anniversary of DMK's mouthpiece Murasoli, Kamal Haasan said Karunanidhi had asked him to join the party way back in the 80s but he is yet to respond to his offer.

It doesn't get bigger than this for Tamil movie fans. Superstars Rajanikanth and Kamal Haasan shared stage at an event organised by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) today.

The DMK is celebrating 75th anniversary of party's mouthpiece Murasoli. Kamal Haasan was one of the speakers at the mega event. While Haasan was seen sitting beside DMK's Stalin, Rajanikanth was seated in the front row with with the audience which also included former BCCI boss N Srinivasan.

"People ask me on Twitter whether I have been making fun of DMK? If I wanted to I would have joined politics way back in the 80s when DMK chief Karunanidhi sent me a telegram asking me to join the party. I haven't replied to him till date," Kamal Haasan. "Tamil Nadu is now witnessing a new era," added Kamal Haasan.

The presence of both Rajanikanth and Kamal Haasan at an event organised by the main Opposition party of Tamil Nadu is hugely significant as both the megastars have given ample hints in the recent past about joining politics.

'READY FOR WAR'

In June, Rajinikanth admitted that he is discussing the prospects of his joining politics but would make an announcement once he finalises it.

"I have not denied it. We are discussing and yet to take a decision. Once I take a decision I will inform you," the actor told reporters.

The actor, who met his fans in May, had asked them to "prepare for war" hinting that he might consider entering politics.

"When a war comes, they will come to the rescue of their motherland. I have a profession, work, duty and so do you. Go to your places, do your duty, take care of your vocation. Let us face the war when it comes," he had said.

KAMAL HAASAN SLAMS CM PALANISWAMI

In the last few days, Kamal Haasan has alleged corruption in the current Palaniswami government in Tamil Nadu. The government has not taken kindly to the accusations with Chief Minister Palaniswami saying that the actor does not know politics

"He is into acting... does not know about politics. After he comes to politics and says (such) things, we will give him a proper respone," the Tamil Nadu chief minister said.To this, Kamal Haasan posted a message on Twitter in which he said "the day I expressed my voice against imposition of Hindi, I had become an amateur politician".

Without naming anyone in his Twitter post, the actor said that those "behind power" and those who forget their responsibility by accepting money" were threatening action against him for tax evasion. Kamal Haasan exhorted people to come forward and question the government. He said that it is the duty of a responsible citizen to question the government on corruption.
