Precious idols discovered while digging for well in Thanjavur

Approximately 600 year old statues of religious idols were unearthed while digging for a well near a temple at Thanjavur.

Palamalai Nadhar temple is an ancient site at Pazanjur in Thanjavur district. The temple comes under Hindu Endowment Charitable Trust which decided to dig a well near the temple.

Officials were surprised to find priceless artefacts buried under their feet. When initial mud was removed to prepare for deep bore well, a statue was recovered. Stunned officials brought in a JCB and carefully began to dig the site hoping for two or three artefacts but were more than shocked to see the number of statues dug out.

A Vinayaga statue, 4 Ambal statues and 2 Dwarabalamugi were among the 14 statues recovered. The shocking part was that the statues were recovered not even 6 feet from the ground. The team also discovered a foundation of a temple. The statues were moved to Pattukottai Thahsildar office. The recovery of the statues is considered as an important find as it would help in bringing more clarity to the history of the region.
