Demonetisation was never an electoral or political decision, it was taken in the long-term interest of our economy, BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav has said.

In an interview with India Today, Madhav said, "It's not a matter of winning or losing elections. The decision was taken in the interest of the country and the economy."

"Black money is the result of aberrations in the society and whoever is holding the same needs to be punished," he said.

The BJP national general secretary firmly made it clear that there was no parallel economy running after demonetisation.

BRING IN REFORMS IN POLITICAL FUNDING

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to all political parties that we have to bring in reforms in political funding," he added.

When asked to comment on what were the BJP's expectations from the Uttar Pradesh elections, Madhav said his party was confident of winning the assembly elections in the state.

Meanwhile, speaking on the issue of Kashmir unrest, he said, "In Kashmir, what we have is the problem of separatism, which is leading to violence, militancy and terrorism."
