Tamil Nadu: Lack of toilets leads to death of 2 girls

Two girls drowned in a pond at Paiyur village near Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu.

Saranya and Darshini were going to the fields to defecate around 8.30 pm last night. Unable to see anything, Darshini (10) fell into the pond. Saranya (13) jumped in to save her friend.

When the girls didn't return home, their families went out searching for them. Fire brigade was called to take the bodies out of the pond.

Villagers are now blaming the authorities for not providing decent toilet facilities. They believe that the girls would have been alive if there were decent toilets in the village.
