China's President Xi Jinping conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their hour-long meeting on Tuesday that India and China should "shelve differences" on border disputes, Chinese officials said.

Their bilateral meeting following the BRICS Summit in Xiamen was the first following the August 28 resolution of the 72-day border stand-off at Doklam.

Xi said that "China and India should respect each other, seek common ground and shelve differences to ensure peace and tranquillity of the border areas," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said.

Xi also called on both sides to "jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in border areas" and to "see each other as development opportunities, not threats", the official Xinhua news agency quoted the Chinese president as saying.

Geng said Xi also conveyed the hope that "India can view China's development in a correct and rational way" and the "need to show to the world that peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation is the only right choice for the two countries."
