Mumbai is witnessing heavy rains since Tuesday evening flooding roads and railway tracks. School and colleges have been asked to remain close as the city braces for more rains today. A recent satellite image shows that a cyclone is moving towards Mumbai.

Mumbai suburbs recorded a whopping 304 mm rainfall till this morning, making it the third highest downpour in a single day since the great Mumbai floods when the city experienced 945 mm rains, followed by 316 mm on August 29 this year.

Flight operations at the busy Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport have also been hit. Reports say least 56 flights have been diverted as the main runway is not operational.

With the weather department forecasting more rain, the civic administration and other agencies have geared up to tackle any eventuality and keep the city afloat unlike on August 29, when the metropolis was flooded.

President Ram Nath Kovind also tweeted on the Mumbai rains through his official handle @rashtrapatibhvn. "Thoughts with families in rain-hit Mumbai, parts of Maharashtra and western India. Government and civil society must work together," President Kovind said.

  • Train updates: According to Central Railway PRO, the trans-harbour line is running normally with slight delay in Harbour and Main line.
  • Flight updates: Nearly 20 flights have been affected due to Mumbai rains. Air India spokesperson said, "We are experiencing heavy rainfall and bad tail winds at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. The flights are taking off and landing from the secondary runway as the main runway has been closed for operations. Delays have been reported in arrival and departure of flights due to fluctuating weather." A total of 16 flights have been diverted to Hyderabad. Sources say still the primary runway of Mumbai airport is not functional. International flight diverted to Hyderabad are Zurich Mumbai (Swiss Air) LX 154, Kulalampur Mumbai (Malaysian Airlines) MH194,, Toronto Mumbai (Air Canada) AC046, Amsterdam to Mumbai (Jet airlines) 9W231.
  • Traffic updates: According to Mumbai Police, traffic is moving slow on the Santacruz Chembur Link Road, South Bound, Chembur; Milan subway is open but water-logged and people are advised to use an alternate route. In Tardeo and Kalbadevi, traffic flow is normal. Andheri station road closed due to water-logging, traffic movement slow on Sion Hospital bridge towards Matunga; Andheri, Dahisar and Khar subways closed.
  • Many flights from Delhi-Mumbai cancelled/delayed due to bad weather. A SpiceJet flight had overshot runway at Mumbai airport on Tuesday evening.
