Mumbai rains: A list of dos and don'ts for Mumbaikars
Mumbaikars, listen up. As you brace for the possibility of more rain, here's a list of do's and don'ts, courtesy the National Disaster Management Authority.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) today tweeted a list of guidelines for Mumbaikars, who have braved heavy rains and will likely have to brace themselves for more showers in the hours to come.
In fact the weather man says the downpour could be similar to the July 2005 Mumbai rains, in which at least 108 people were killed in two days.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured all possible support to the Maharashtra government, and urged residents of Mumbai and surrounding areas "to take all essential precautions in the wake of the heavy rain."
Spoke to Maharashtra CM @Dev_Fadnavis on the situation arising due to incessant rain in Mumbai & surrounding areas. @CMOMaharashtra- Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) August 29, 2017
Mumbaikars, the first thing to keep in mind right now: Don't leave your homes if you can help it.
Now, here are some other guidlines you need to follow during a flood. You can track all the live updates right here, and find important helpline numbers here.
- Don't drive in places that are flooded.
- Trying to swim or walk in flowing water can be dangerous.
- If your electrical equipment has been damaged, don't use it. And don't use any electrical equipment when you're standing on a wet surface (this is particularly true for concrete floors).
- Do not consume food if it has fallen into flood water, or has come into contact with it in any way.
- Your power connection need to be turned off. So does your gas connection. And be on the lookout for gas leaks!
- Get to high ground.
- Boil water before drinking it, or drink chlorinated water.
- Sewerage lines, gutters, drains and the like: Avoid them like the plague, and stay far away.
- The same holds true for electric poles and power lines that have fallen.
- Be on the lookout for broken electric poles and wires, sharp objects and debris.
