Mumbai building collapse: Lucky escape for family of 5

The family of 5 left the building just a day before its collapse after they saw cracks in the walls.

A day after a building collapsed in Bandra, Mumbai where six children lost their lives, one family from the same structure escaped death closely.

On Friday, when everyone was mourning the deaths, the same of five belonging to the same building came for the final rites. This family had left the building just a day before the incident. The timely decision has kept the whole family alive.

On the third floor of the building, one garment businessman Salauddin Khan, 40, on reaching home after work on Wednesday saw a part of his house damaged. He quickly informed other building residents and left with his wife and three sons.

CRACKS IN BUILDING

Speaking to India Today, Khan said, "When I came home, I saw a major wall portion had developed huge cracks. I immediately informed other house owners. I warned them that it can be dangerous and fatal. However, no one listened to me."

Khan with his family left home on the same night and went to his another house in Sion. On the next day, the structures collapsed. Khan said, "God saved me and my family. It was just in the nick of time. However, I am saddened by deaths of so many young souls. However, if my warning would have been taken seriously, all lives could have been saved."

ILLEGAL STRUCTURE

The incident took place in the afternoon when mainly children and women were at home. The incident took place in Behrampada area of Bandra East, where most of the structures are illegal.

The BMC officials are planning to demolish the illegal structures, in Bandra from Saturday, but it will be a tough job as the locals would protest against any such move.
