Gorkha Rifles jawan cremated today with full military honour

Three Gorkha Rifles jawans, who were martyred during a counter infiltration operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in frontier district of Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir on May 20, were cremated with full military honours at Subathu in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday.

Mortal remains of Havildar Giris Gurung, Havildar Damar Bahadur Pun and Rifleman Rabin Sharma of 4/1 Gorkha Rifles were received by 14 Gorkha Training Centre and handed over to their family members who travelled all the way from Nepal to perform the last rites.

While Havildar Giris Gurung belonged to Nagidhar village of Kashi district, Havildar Damar Bahadur Pun hailed from Karing village of district Milni and Rifleman Rabin Sharma was a resident of village Chuka of district Parbat in Nepal.

"These jawans have made the supreme sacrifice during a counter infiltration operation and it was a hand to hand combat. The state government will take care of their families and education of their children. We are proud of them," Dr Colonel (Rtd) D R Shandil said.

Dozens of 14 Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) jawans and officers besides the civil administration officers and locals took part in the funeral ceremony of martyred jawans. The last rites were performed by the family members amid anti-Pakistan slogans shouted with visible anger on the faces of the people.

Though Gorkha Rifles is no stranger to the sacrifices and valour but this is the first time when three jawans were martyred and were cremated simultaneously.

The family members demanded stern action against Pakistan and said the Army should retaliate and decimate the rogue nation.

"I want to take revenge of my father's sacrifice by joining Indian Army. Pakistan should be taught a lesson," said Milan, son of martyred Havildar Damar Bahadur Pun, who performed last rites of his father.

Rifleman Rabin Sharma's brother Rajesh Sharma also demanded action against Pakistan which continues to violate ceasefire everyday.
