Modernist wave

Varied treasures from the estate of late Ernevaz K. Dubash, a Mumbai-based collector of miniatures, antique furniture and art, will be going under the hammer at Pundole's Spring 2015 auction on April 9.

A striking piece in the Modern Art section titled Metascape by Akbar Padamsee has piqued the interest of collectors. Signed and dated 'Padamsee 1977,' the visceral oil on canvas has an estimate of Rs 1.5-2.5 crore.

Thick swathes of colour cut searing lines of vibrancy across a canvas that seems unable to control it. Probing the contours of Padamsee's deep connection with nature, the piece throbs with a raw energy symbolic of the earth. The stark layering coalesce on the silver-blue swath, which is all but swallowed in the overpowering shades surrounding it.

His exploration of mystical spaces have underpinnings of Vedic philosophy. The piece will feature alongside works of Tyeb Mehta, M.F Husain, F.N. Souza and V.S. Gaitonde
