The Maratha Samaj in Mumbai and Maharashtra has taken strong offence after a morphed photo of newly-elected Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the posture of Shivaji Maharaj went viral on social media.

The person who tagged that message in the Facebook post said that he was the Hindu Samaj leader and that he respected and supported Yogi. Several people since have shared that Facebook post and have been spreading the same on WhatsApp.

The Maratha community today filed an FIR with the Vasai police station in Mumbai in connection with the case. Rajaram Mullick, Maratha Samaj leader from the area, said, "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is our God. No one can insult him. Yogi Adityanath could be a favourite among people over there and his followers, but one cannot insult our God Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. We are going to go on a huge protest march if the accused are not attested soon. We have given the cops an ultimatum to arrest the culprits, otherwise we will protest."

ONE ARRESTED

On Monday, Pant Nagar Police in Ghatkopar arrested one Rinku Gupta for posting a photo on social media in which Adityanath is compared with warrior Shivaji.

Pant Nagar police booked him and arrested him after locals and Maratha Samaj groups complained to the police.

Gupta is in police custody right now.
