An encounter between security forces and Maoists is underway in Dantewada, in Chhattisgarh. One jawan has sustained severe injuries in the encounter, news agency ANI reported.

The encounter comes a month after 25 jawans of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed in a dastardly attack by Maoists in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.

The Naxals had laid an ambush on a patrolling party of the CRPF near Burkapal village which was supporting road construction work in the area when they were attacked. They had triggered an IED blast and then started firing indiscriminately at the CRPF jawans.

The Ministry of Home Affairs felt that the Sukma attack pointed to a leadership failure and called for a need to overhaul the anti-Naxal strategy in Maoist-infested regions. Ten Naxals, believed to be involved in the Sukma attack, were arrested more than a fortnight ago.

The Sukma attack was the worst Naxal attack on security forces since the 2010 attack of Dantewada, in which 76 CRPF jawans were killed in an ambush by Naxals near Chitalnar village in Dantewada.
