In an attempt to bag the crucial tribal vote bank in Manipur, union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday stated that the Centre could initiate a CBI inquiry into the death of nine tribal youths during a violent agitation against the Manipur state government in 2015. "We shall address long pending grievances of the people and deliver justice to the nine dead youth by initiating a proper and respectable investigation," Singh said while addressing a campaign rally for BJP candidates in the remote Churachandpur district. "If needed we will handover the case to CBI," he said adding that the BJP was committed to bringing about an honourable solution and burial of the dead bodies.
NO BURIAL FOR YOUTH
Bodies of eight tribal youth who died during the agitation have been kept at a morgue in the district with locals refusing to bury them as a mark of protest. In, 2015 the hill district of Churachandapur had erupted in violent protest against a slew of steps by the Ibobi Singh government terming them "anti-tribal". In order to meet the Inner Line Permit (ILP) demand raised by people in Imphal valley, the Congress state government had passed three controversial legislations - the Protection of Manipur People (PMP) Bill, the Manipur Land Reform and Land Revenue (7th Amendment) Bill 2015 and the Shops and Establishment (2nd Amendment) Bill, 2015. Amid deteriorating law and order situation in the district, Manipur police had to fire at protesters to curb the agitation. The police action resulted in the death of the young men whose bodies still await cremation. Protesting tribals have demanded complete "separation from Manipur state" after the incident. Rajnath Singh urged tribals to vote for the BJP so that the party could initiate the process for an "honourabe solution" to their political problem.
