Malda: 26-year-old trying to deliver consignment of fake currency notes worth Rs 1 lakh, arrested
Amajuddin Sheikh, a resident of Dounapur area in Malda was apprehended near NH 34 while waiting to deliver the consignment of 50 fake notes of Rs 2000.
A 26 year-old-man was arrested from the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Malda district on Friday night with fake currency worth Rs 1 lakh.
Amajuddin Sheikh, a resident of Dounapur area in Malda was apprehended near NH 34 while waiting to deliver the consignment of 50 fake notes of Rs 2000.
Earlier this month, two more people were arrested from the same area for carrying four Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) of the new Rs 2000 denomination.
POROUS INDIA-BANGLADESH BORDER A PROBLEM
So far, several youths in connection with the fake currency racket have been nabbed by National Intelligence Agency (NIA)from the district of Malda.
The India-Bangladesh border area in Malda and Murshidabad district is infamous for being the fake currency hub of India.
In a written reply in Rajya Sabha recently, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju had informed that FICN worth Rs 14.76 lakh have been seized from the Malda district till now.
Expressing his concern about the porous nature of the border, Rijiju had said, "Some portion of India-Bangladesh border in Malda district is unfenced due to low lying, pending land acquisition. The government of India has decided to plug the gaps along the border by means of physical and non-physical barriers."
