The Maharashtra government on Tuesday announced a probe by SIT (Special Investigation Team) in 432 redevelopment projects under Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA). The SIT will also probe approval to projects pending from the last 10 years.

The announcement was made by Minister of State for Housing Ravindra Waikar in the state assembly.

The probe was ordered in response to a query raised in the question hour by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ashish Shelar. Waikar informed the house that MHADA provides additional FSI (Floor Space Index) to such projects in order to build affordable housing.

"Apart from 33 projects for which No Objection Certificates have been given, MHADA has given 1,56, 520.41 square meter additional area for 432 projects. Out of this, only 31,319.79 square meter has been handed over to MHADA," said Waikar.

Shelar, who had raised the issue in Lower House alleged that developers are using the scheme to make money using the loopholes and partisan approach by MHADA. "Though some projects have taken off, this has resulted in stalling many projects... The actual beneficiaries for whom these affordable houses are to be constructed are ultimately kept on the waiting list... Will SIT probe these irregularities?" Shelar had asked.

"The total cost of area that has not been handed over to MHADA is around Rs 6,000 crore," Shelar alleged.
