Is the Blue Whale Challenge just a hoax? Or have people started misusing the very idea?

We can save that debate for later because a report from Madhya Pradesh's Datia has it that two teenager boys hanged themselves and that the police suspects these kids to have taken up the nefarious Blue Whale Challenge. Shivam Dangi, 18 years old, and Sagar Yogi, 19 years old, hanged themselves in their houses today.

While people are writing op-eds about the Blue Whale Challenge being a hoax and blaming the media for creating "nation-wide" panic, Madhya Pradesh Police decided to explore the possibilities of the kids having taken up the challenge, that has proven fatal to many, as they found suspicious cuts on the bodies of both the teenagers. Neither of the boys left behind a suicide note.

Sub Inspector Rachna Mohar of the Kotwali police station told India Today that the mobile phones of both the boys have been seized. "We have come to know that Dangi used to be on the phone till late in the night and used to go to the terrace of his house to ensure that his family members did not come to know what he was doing," Mohar said.

Dangi's father accepted that his son was always hooked to the phone. "He used to stay with his grandmother in Datia and she told me that he was always on the phone," he said.

Sagar's part of the story is more haunting.

Police said Sagar called up one of his friends early in the morning today and said he was planning to kill himself. His friend did not take him seriously and took his time to reach Sagar's house but it was too late by then. Sagar had already hanged himself.

The Blue Whale Challenge has hit Madhya Pradash. While three younsters are suspected to have ended their lives because of the challenge, two others were rescued minutes before they were about to kill themselves.

The MP governmnet has banned downloading of the game but it seems to have had little impact for an obvious reason - the Blue Whale Challenge is not an app that could be downloaded to your smartphones and it cannot be banned either.

Counselling sessions are being held in schools across the state but youngsters are still getting trapped, apparently.
