Kupwara encounter: Captured terrorist is 22-year-old from Lahore; NIA to take custody

A terrorist who was captured alive during an encounter in Kupwara has been identified as a 22-year-old national from Pakistan.

A terrorist who was captured alive on Tuesday during an encounter in Naugam sector near the LoC in Kupwara district of Kashmir , has been identified as Bahadur Ali, a Pakistani national from Lahore, reported a news website.

Ali, 22, is a trained Lashkar terrorist. The security forces also recovered Rs 23,000 from him, apart from three AK-47 rifles and two pistols.

The National Investigation Agency is in Srinagar and intends to take custody of Saifullah Bahadur Ali.

Four other Lashkar terrorists were killed by security forces in the gunbattle. The arrest of a terrorist in Kupawara is a "big success" for security forces as it brings in open the game plan of Pakistan, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said on Tuesday.

The army sources had earlier said that all the militants were foreign nationals.

CURFEW REIMPOSED

Curfew was reimposed in many parts of Srinagar today after protests erupted in the city on Tuesday, soon after the curfew was lifted.

There were reports of protests and clashes till late evening from some parts of Srinagar.

SEPARATIST LEADERS ARRESTED

The separatists had given a call for march towards Kulgam today. They asked the people to march to pay respect to the civilians killed in the clashes in Kulgam.

Separatist leaders Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani were arrested soon after they tried to defy their house arrests.

The Valley had been witnessing protests since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8.
