ABOUT THE ATTACK

Kuchibhotla, and a friend and fellow Indian Alok Reddy Madasani were at a bar in Olathe, Kansas, where they were shot by a 51-year-old American navy veteran, Adam Purinton. Madasani, who suffered injuries, was later discharged from a hospital.

An American, Ian Grillot was also injured in the shooting after he lunged at Purinton. His action led to him being hailed as a hero in the February 23 incident.

Kuchibhotla completed his B.Tech from Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University in 2005 before leaving for the United States for higher studies and a job. His death is being seen as a hate crime by many, with witnesses reporting that Purinton shouted 'get out of my country' at the Indian duo before opening fire.

Purinton was arrested soon after the shooting and he remains jailed awaiting judicial proceedings.
