In Short

  • Protest meetings against BJP not happening under JD-U banner.
  • Sharad Yadav camp is doing so to avoid anti-party activity charge against him.
  • Sharad Yadav's supporters organised the 'Sanjhi Virasat Bachao Sammelan' event.

The Janata Dal (United) is mulling options to oust its rebel leader Sharad Yadav from the Rajya Sabha. Indications are that the JD(U) leadership is in a wait-and-watch mode to press anti-party activity charges against him.

The development comes after Sharad Yadav shared the stage with senior leaders of Opposition parties during a function organised by his supporters in the national capital. At the 'Sanjhi Virasat Bachao Sammelan' event, Opposition parties led by the Congress attacked the BJP, blaming it for lynching incidents involving minorities during its rule.

Rahul Gandhi, Farooq Abdulla and D Raja spoke on the occasion.

Interestingly, the Sharad Yadav camp is not using the JD(U) banner for such protest meetings. The function today was held under the banner of the Sanjhi Virasat Bachao Sammelan, the three-day Bihar tour was called the Jan Samvad Yatra while the upcoming meeting in Patna will be called the Jan Adalat.

SHARAD YADAV's RAJYA SABHA MEMBERSHIP TILL 2022

Sources tell India Today that the Sharad Yadav camp is doing this deliberately to avoid anti-party activity charge against the leader as that may cost him his Rajya Sabha membership. Sharad Yadav has his Rajya Sabha membership till 2022. The Rajya Sabha ethics committee is to be reconstituted by Venkaiah Naidu and it will have an NDA majority.

According to sources, JD(U) may move a complaint application against Sharad Yadav to Chairman Rajya Sabha office if he participates in the 27th August rally organised by Lalu Yadav, citing it as an anti-party activity. Hence a wait-and-watch approach is being followed for now in Sharad Yadav's case.

Meanwhile, a senior JDU leader dropped a hint by saying that all those who will participate in Lalu Yadav's rally will be seen as his supporters and party will be duty-bound to act against them.
