The power tussle in the Janata Dal (United) has intensified between rival camps headed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and rebel leader Sharad Yadav.

A delegation led by JD-U leader in Rajya Sabha RCP Singh today met the Election Commission and staked a claim to be the real JD-U. The Sharad Yadav camp had submitted a similar claim last month.

Talking to India Today, RCP Singh said, "Sharad Yadav has voluntarily given up the party membership. He didn't participate in the party executive meeting called in Patna but organised a parallel meeting of his supporters. He also took part in the RJD rally in Patna which amounts to an anti-party activity, he has voluntarily given up the party membership so he cannot claim any right over the JD-U." Under the 10th schedule after voluntarily giving up the party membership, Sharad Yadav is set to lose his Rajya Sabha membership and when he realised this, he came to the Election Commission to delay proceedings", he added.

Party spokesperson K C Tyagi said that the delegation had given affidavits to prove that 70 out of 70 MLAs in Bihar, 30 out of 30 Bihar MLCs and 16 out of 20 office-bearers were with Nitish Kumar.

Tyagi said that their case was even stronger than Akhilesh Yadav, who wrested control of the Samajwadi Party from his father Mulayam Singh ahead of Uttar Pradesh polls. "Mulayam Singh was President while Sharad Yadav is not, some of the Samajwadi Party MLAs and office-bearers were with Mulayam while in our case, none of the MLAs are with Sharad Yadav so there is no contest here", he added.
