While the media attention outside NIA headquarters on Jai Singh road focused on Syed Ali Shah Geelani's sons Nayeem and Naseem, Deputy Superintendent of Police Faheem Ali, deployed with Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was grilled through the day by the agency sleuths.

According to documents accessed by India Today, Ali was deployed with Mirwaiz for eight years. He worked on building the separatist network and facilitated several activities of Mirwaiz.

The security cover provided to Mirwaiz was reduced by the Jammu and Kashmir government in the first week of July following Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ayub Pandith's lynching on June 23. Mirwaiz occasionally delivered sermons in the Nowhatta area near Jamia Masjid where Pandith was lynched.

Sources said that DSP Ali was then removed and posted out to Shopian since his proximity to the leader had been exposed.

Ali, who worked in the security facility of the Hurriyat Conference leader, operated from two cell phones. While the BSNL number was for public domain, he held a private Aircel number from which he made contacts, arranging secret meetings and dealings. His name has figured in a number of conversations. The sources said, "The DSP (Ali) acted on the behest of Mirwaiz, rather than serve as a police officer."

Through influential channels, Ali was supposed to have inducted a team of young men from downtown and other areas, who took the oath of Indian Constitution but served the interests of the separatists. All the Special Police Officers (SPOs) deployed with him are under the scanner of security agencies.

An inspector deployed for his security has been retained by Mirwaiz as a secretary. Many of these cops are now under scanner, but NIA believes that Ali seems to be the man who worked with separatists with a camouflage of uniform.
