India, Kyrgyzstan sign several agreements, PM Modi lauds visiting Kyrgyz President's democratic values

India and Kyrgyzstan signed several agreements on Tuesday. Prime Minister Modi and the visiting Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev discussed several issues, including combating terrorism, extremism and radicalism, on the occasion. The two leaders also issued a joint statement.

Prime Minister Modi attributed the strong foundation of democracy in Kyrgyzstan to its President.

  1. Speaking at the event to sign agreements between the two countries, Modi said he was delighted to welcome President Almazbek Atambayev on his first state visit to India.
  2. "Our societies share a sense of warmth. We are also bound by a common belief in democratic values, traditions," Modi said.
  3. The PM said, "Much credit goes to President Atambayev for nurturing and building strong foundation of democracy in Kyrgyz Republic."
  4. The two leaders discussed a range of issues including combating terrorism, extremism and radicalism.
  5. Modi said they discussed how the two countries could work together to secure our youth and society against common challenges of terrorism, extremism and radicalism.
  6. "We focused on common priority of diversifying, deepening bilateral engagement," Modi said.
  7. "President Atambayev and I reviewed our co-operation in the field of defence," he said.
  8. PM Modi further said, "Kyrgyz Republic is a valuable partner in our common pursuit of making Central Asia a region of sustainable peace, stability and prosperity. President Almazbek Atambayev and I agreed on the need to connect our economies more deeply. We will work to strengthen bilateral trade and economic linkages and facilitate greater people to people exchange."
  9. The PM said the two countries have decided to build on their development cooperation including capacity building and training, will give youth priority. We will encourage engagement in healthcare, tourism, IT, agriculture, mining and energy.
  10. While Modi wished Atambayev a memorable and productive visit in India, the Kyrgyz President thanked the former for inviting him and for his warmth and hospitality.
