In Short

  • Shekhar Suman has condemned the 'nationalist brigade' for targeting Gurmehar.
  • He added that mob had no right to decide if Gurmehar was guilty of being an anti-national.
  • Cricketer Gautam Gambhir too supported Gurmehar.

Following a widespread debate on the alleged anti-India views of Gurmehar Kaur and her condemnation by several prominent politicians and others, there are not many who are willing to come out in the open and call Gurmehar the victim of misconception.

Even as cricketer Gautam Gambhir openly stood against his senior Virender Sehwag's comments on Gurmehar, film star and TV anchor Shekhar Suman too, has condemned the 'nationalist brigade' for their mob-justice and said that the way Gurmehar was threatened, was highly deplorable and the mob had no right to decide if she was guilty of being an anti-national.

Talking to Indian Today, Suman, who was in Agra for the shoot of movie 'Bhoomi', said that Gurmehar may have given a statement which she thought was correct and if it was against the law, then people should let the court decide that instead of taking law in their own hands.

He also said if people themselves start making all decisions, then what was the sense of having such a huge infrastructure of police and courts.

He said that this entire issue was a media construct as currently those issues got prominence on the street as well as in the Parliament, which was raised by the media. Some channels create fake news merely to increase their TRP.

Suman said that he did not support people who supported Pakistan as there was no way it could be treated leniently after what it was doing to Indian soldiers every day, but the way social media was spreading like a plague in the country, soon it would have to be muzzled since there were no ethics on social media and people post whatever they want, not caring about the effect of their post on the society.

He further added that if it was not controlled, soon social media will become a cancer that will eat into the peace and harmony of the country. He said that people blame governments for deteriorating peace in the country, but the fact is that it was the people who were causing this and laying the blame on governments.

Just like Sanjay Dutt, who is playing the lead role in 'Bhoomi', Shekhar too considers this movie to be his comeback into Bollywood after a long hiatus.

He said that he had previously worked with Sanjay Dutt in 'Insaaf Lahu Se' in 1994 and after a long gap of 24 years, the two were working together in another movie, although Dutt hasn't changed a bit in this time. He still gets serious while he is in front of the camera and only relaxes when the director calls 'cut'.
