Rahul Gandhi arrives in Gorakhpur in connection with children's deaths in hospital

Till yesterday, the death toll in the BRD hospital was 71 and were said to have been due to various causes including encephalitis and an alleged shortage of oxygen.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has arrived in Gorakhpur in connection with the deaths of children in the BRD medical college hospital where the toll has gone up to 72 since August 7.

Till yesterday, the death toll in the BRD hospital was 71 and were said to have been due to various causes including encephalitis and an alleged shortage of oxygen.

Six encephalitis-related deaths were reported between August 12 and August 14, while five encephalitis-related deaths were reported from August 15 to August 16.

Earlier, UP Health Minister Sidharth Nath Singh had said that 60 children died due to various diseases since August 7.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is also on a one day visit to Gorakhpur to inaugurate 'Swachch Uttar Pradesh - Swasthya Uttar Pradesh campaign' which will be carried out between August 20-25 in all the districts.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has suggested a CBI probe be conducted into the children deaths along with all the other ongoing probes to ascertain the reasons leading to the tragedy.
