Army Chief General Bipin Rawat is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir from today.

A Defence spokesman said Rawat would be visiting Udhampur, Srinagar, Nagrota and Siachen during his tour. He will also visit formations at Kupwara, Anantnag, Akhnoor and Rajouri, where he is going to be briefed about the prevailing security situation by officers there.

General Rawat lauded the role of the Northern Command in restoring peace and normalcy during the recent unrest. He also commended the soldiers for retaliating strongly against the unprovoked ceasefire violations by Pakistan. Rawat said, "Every soldier of our Army plays an important role in security of the nation because it is the contribution of every soldier that makes the Army efficient and strong."

The visit assumes importance as the Northern Command is the first place General Rawat is visiting after taking over as the Army chief. He emphasised that we need to evolve a dynamic strategy to handle the proxy war and defeat the enemy's nefarious designs.
