Music maestro AR Rahman has condemned the killing of senior journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh, saying the current scenario does not represent the India he knows.

The Kannada journalist, known for her left-leaning outlook and forthright views on Hindutva politics, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at her residence on September 5.

The 50-year-old music composer expressed sadness over the incident.

"I am so sad about this. These kind of things don't happen in India. This is not my India. I want India to be progressive and kind," Rahman told reporters.

The Oscar winning-musician was speaking at the premiere of his upcoming film "One Heart: The A R Rahman Concert Film".

Rahman, in the past, has spoken out against rising intolerance in the country.

The brazen killing of Lankesh has once again come back to haunt the fraternity of journalists in India. It was just two years ago that noted scholar MM Kalburgi was murdered in a similar fashion.

The murder of Lankesh has left many shocked and concerned about the consequences people face for exercising one's right to freedom of speech and expression.

Lankesh was the editor of 'Gauri Lankesh Patrike', a weekly Kannada tabloid, and was known for voicing her opinion against the right-wing forces.
