In Short

  • Manohar Parrikar adopted Baraulia under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana
  • Baraulia village is in Amethi district, a Gandhi stronghold
  • Since adoption, the village has undergone transformation

It was perhaps with the intent of making inroads in to the Gandhi bastion of Amethi that Smriti Irani identified Baraulia village in Amethi and recommended its adoption to then defence minister Manohar Parikar under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.

In less than two years since it was adopted by Manohar Parrikar in September 2015, development has found a way to reach the village.

After decades of neglect and apathy, the village now boasts of pucca roads, irrigation facility for farmers and an upcoming community centre.

DEMAND FOR A SCHOOL

Awareness on cleanliness is growing among villagers, and 100 toilets have been recently built in the village. However, Baraulia is yet to become 100 per cent open-defecation free. The population of the village is nearly 6,000 and another 1,000 toilets need to be constructed, said Surendra Pratap Singh, village pradhan.

The village has a junior high school and students after Class 8 have to travel 18 kms every day to study at the nearest secondary school. Villagers have now demanded a senior secondary school and a college in Baraulia.

The power transformers in Baraulia have been changed, and according to villagers this has improved the power supply considerably. Nearly 250 solar lights have been installed in the village and a community water tank is also under construction.

BECOMING A MODEL VILLAGE

For their banking needs, villagers have to walk at least 5 kms to access the nearest bank in Hardo village. Among their demands are an ATM facility in Baraulia and better connectivity through public transport. Villagers are hopeful that their concerns will be addressed soon.

Asha Dubey, a nurse who lives in Baraulia, wants better medical facilities--there are few doctors at the local hospital and villagers have to take their kin to hospitals by themselves due to lack of an ambulance.

Given the pace of development in Baraulia in the last two years, villagers have high expectations from the government to turn around their village into a model village.
