Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi on Thursday said her party didn't oppose Hindi, but that it was only against forcing people to learn it, the Tamil daily Thina Thanthi reported.

Kanimozhi's remarks came at a conference organized by the DMK's West Velur unit in Jolarpettai to oppose the imposition of Hindi, and to ask for an exemption for Tamil Nadu from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the report said.

Only weeks ago, DMK Working President MK Stalin said that by imposing Hindi, the BJP government at the Centre was betraying all non-Hindi speaking Indians.

He slammed a parliamentary committee's proposal to make it mandatory for MPs and Union ministers who know Hindi to use it as their official language, both in speeches and writings.

Stalin also criticised the BJP government for - among other things - making Hindi a compulsory subject in CBSE schools across the country.

In fact, the DMK deputy chief alleged that the BJP-led central government had been making efforts to destroy and decimate the unity of the nation, and urged the Narendra Modi administration to "give up these efforts of sidelining non-Hindi speaking citizens."
