US President Donald Trump spoke to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and discussed the Ukraine conflict and the situation in Afghanistan with her, the White House has said.

"The leaders discussed several issues of mutual concern and interest, including the conflict in eastern Ukraine and the situation in Afghanistan," the White House said in a statement after the telephonic conversation between the two leaders.

"The leaders pledged close cooperation and coordination on these and other issues. They agreed to remain in close contact," it said.
