Rajasthan: Internet suspended after communal flare-up in Bundi

Communal flare went unabated in Rajasthan as police used batons and detained 50 mobsters who were hell bent to offer prayers at a disputed site in Bundi on Monday.

The situation is under control, Vishal Bansal, inspector general of police, Kota range told India Today.

"The administration will not allow any such activity that endangers peace," he said.

The place Mandhata Balajhiu cenotaph was damaged by a lightning strike some decades ago.

During its restoration, someone noticed a figure resembling Hanuman in one of the damaged pillars.

That figure was installed as the idol of Hanuman in April last year.

However, the area has a considerable population of Muslims who felt installation of an idol was a provocative step.

A peace committee was set up which decided that Hindus should not hold prayers at the spot.

However, as the state has been witnessing communal incidents and the emergence of hardliners.

Hindu Mahasabha and other organisations declared that they would offer prayers.

The administration, however, insisted that an agreement derived at the peace committee meeting should not be violated unilaterally.

The protesters' march towards the cenotaph led to tensions in the city and markets wore a deserted look.

When police failed to stop protesters peacefully, it resorted to using mild force to disperse them and arrested a few of them.
