A 31-year-old man was murdered in cold blood by a gang of men at Ukkadam in Coimbatore on 16th March. Though, initially it was thought to be personal rivalry, police are now hinting it to be the work of a religious group.

Farook, who hailed from Ukkadam, had a scrap shop at Bilal market. He was an atheist and called himself a free thinker. Unfortunately, Farook's claims of disposing Gods including that of Allah had irked certain Muslim groups in the vicinity. Farook was a member of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazagam and preached Periyar's verses and Dravidianism.

On 16th March, around 11.45pm Farook got a call from an unknown number. The man on the otherside claimed to be doing a scrap business as well and asked Farook if he could meet him near Corporation Sewage Treatment Plant to discuss about a deal. Farook agreed to meet the unknown man and left in his motorbike.

As he reached the place, the gang attacked Farook from behind and slashed him with a knife. Before Farook could realize the situation, he had sustained fatal cuts to his body. Farook still tried to evade him but couldn't run as he had lost a lot of blood, he cried out of pain, but the gang mercilessly slashed him to death.

Passersby rushed to the spot hearing Farook's cries but couldn't help much as had died already and the gang escaped.

Farook is survived by his wife, a 10-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter. Cops were rushed to the spot to diffuse any unpleasant situation.

Police now claim that they are changing the investigation angle from 'personal enmity' to murder by a 'religious prejudice group'. Four special teams were formed to catch the culprits. Two people Ansad and Saddam Hussein have surrendered at 5th magisterial court at Pothanur.
