Chhattisgarh: Three naxals killed in encounter with security forces, INSAS, AK-47 recovered

Security forces killed three Maoists and recovered an INSAS, an AK 47 and an SLR besides ammunition and other materials used in making explosives.

Security forces in Chhattisgarh claimed to have notched a major success with the elimination of three Maoists who are said to have carried a total reward of Rs 13 lakh on their heads.

During an operation during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday in Rajnandgaon district, security forces killed three Maoists identified as Mahesh, Rakesh and Ranjit, who was a deputy commander. Two Naxals among them carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh each while one of them carried a reward of Rs 3 lakh.

Security forces have recovered an INSAS, an AK 47 and an SLR from the slain Maoists besides ammunition and other materials used in making explosives. All the weapons recovered from the slain Maoists were state weapons and had been snatched from security forces by the Maoists.

The encounter took place in the forests of Kopenkadka in Rajnandgaon district which is at the tri-junction of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

There had been an increase in Naxal activity and presence in the region as part of a strategy by the rebels to enhance their sphere of influence north of Bastar.
