A man in West Bengal's Burdwan district has claimed that he was arrested for sending an SMS to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Thirty-seven-year-old Sudipto Roy, an advocate at the Burdwan Court, has alleged that on Sunday afternoon, a group of police officers from the Burdwan police station visited his house and inquired whether he had sent any SMS to the Chief Minister.

A lawyer by profession, Sudipto Roy had allegedly sent a text message to Mamata Banerjee seeking help for his mother. Roy claims he has been fighting for justice for his mother, who was sexually harassed by CPI-(M) workers in 2012.

AWAITING JUSTICE, SAYS ROY

"The police officers told me that I was being detained for sending an SMS to the Chief Minister. I had sent an SMS to Mamata Banerjee seeking justice for my mother. CPI-(M) leader Bisheshwar Ray tried to rape my mother in 2012. But so far, no action has been taken in this regard and we have not got justice," Roy said.

Roy was initially detained and later taken to the Burdwan police station, where he was shown arrested. He claims he was repeatedly questioned by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police and the local Inspector-in-Charge on why he had sent an SMS to the Chief Minister.

ROY'S BROTHER DETAINED

Sudipto said his elder brother Subrata was also detained for questioning on the matter. "Officers told me that my brother had been detained for sending a text message to the Chief Minister although I have no knowledge about the matter. Even I was detained with my brother," claimed Sudipto's elder brother Subrata Roy.

BURDWAN POLICE REFUTES ROY'S CLAIMS

However, the district police have refuted Roy's claims, stating that he was arrested based on a harassment complaint lodged by his estranged wife at the Burdwan police station recently.

"On Sunday, a complaint of harassment was lodged with the Burdwan police station by Sonali Roy, who is reportedly his estranged wife. Sonali lodged a complaint against her husband Sudipto Ray for repeatedly threatening and harassing her. So we produced the accused before the court where he was remanded to 14-day police custody. IPC Sections 498 and 307 have been imposed on him," informed Burdwan Additional Superintendent of Police Dyutiman Bhattacharya.
