The Supreme Court has pulled up UP government and its minister Azam Khan for calling Bulandshahr rape case a political conspiracy. The apex court on Monday issued notices and sought explanation from the Samajwadi Party leader and the Akhilesh government.

Earlier, Azam Khand had said that the Bulandshahr gangrape was a political conspiracy hatched to defame the SP government. He had said that it was done with an eye on the upcoming assembly elections in the state.

"We must also probe whether this entire controversy is a move by some opposition elements to defame the government. People who want to come to power may be stooping this low for political interests," Azam Khan had then said.

VICTIM APPROACHED SC

Following the statement of the UP minister, the minor victim moved the SC seeking FIR against him and erring police officers.

Hearing this petition, the SC questioned "whether such statements calling rape a conspiracy be called freedom of speech or defeat principles of constitutional compassion?"

THE INCIDENT

The case pertains to an incident of gangrape that happened in July, when a Noida-based family was on its way to Shahjahanpur to attend a funeral. When their vehicle approached Dostpur village on NH-91, they found road blocked with iron rod. When they got down to inquire about it, about half-a-dozen people armed with guns surrounded them.

They took the family into thickets, some 50 metres from the highway and looted their valuables. Then, they allegedly dragged a woman and her minor daughter and gangraped them. The male members of the family were held at the gunpoint at some distance in the dark.
