The flood situation continues to be grim in Bihar with the death toll rising to 253 on Sunday. The Burhi Gandak river in Muzaffarpur, which was flowing over the danger level, resulted in the collapse of the Rajawada embankment in Mushahari block. It further led to flood water entering new areas and affecting thousands.

"The Burhi Gandak river has been swelling and flowing with full fury. The water in the river is flowing 80 cm above the danger level. Due to the massive pressure, the Rajawada embankment collapsed," said Dharmendra Singh, district magistrate, Muzaffarpur.

Flood water entered dozens of villages after the Rajawada embankment collapsed. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were pressed into action to carry out rescue operations and bring the affected people to safer areas. The DM along with the administrative team continued to camp in the area while overseeing the repair work of the embankment.

"We are trying to carry out the repair work on the embankment. Muzaffarpur has been cut off from the rest of the villages. We have deployed a team to plug both the sides of the embankment at the earliest," said Singh.

A total of 4.21 lakh people have been shifted to 1,358 relief camps in different parts of the state.
