Several heavy weapons and bullets, including AK-47 rifles, were recovered in a joint operation by Army, police and Border Gaurds Bangladesh (BGB) from remote areas of Rangamati's Langadu Upazila of Bangladesh today.

District Superintendent of Police Syed Tariqul Hasan said that the operation started at Wednesday midnight and continued till 10am on Thursday.

OC(Officer-in-charge) Mominul Islam of Langadu Police Station said two AK-47 assault rifles, an automatic rifle, 152 rounds of bullets, four magazines, five sets of garments and other clothes of the army, nine backpacks and three mobile phones were found in Galachari area of Langadu.

Media reports said that the weapons and bullets were recovered from a hillock inside the jungle on the western side of the local Shuvo Chakma house.

Khagrachari Army Region Staff Officer (G2I) Major Mujahidul Islam told the media that Zone Commander of Langadu, Abdul Alim Chowdhury is leading the operation. The area is 8 kilometers from Langadu Sadar.

Two rifles among the recovered arms were found hidden under canal water. When asked about these weapons, Rangamati Police Superintendent said that the weapons were found abandoned.

The police are yet to find out who abandoned the weapons.

This is the second such incident in this month. On June 2, police recovered huge quantities of firearms from the neighboring district Narayanganj, which was found abandoned in a pond.
