Assam: Minority Students' Union leader shot dead in busy market in Kokrajhar

President of All Bodo Minority Students' Union (ABMSU) Lafiqul Islam Ahmed (30) was shot dead today in a crowded market of Titaguri by two motorcycle-borne masked men.

Ahmed died on the spot after he was shot in the chest at close range while he was visiting the market.

The area where the crime took place falls is a sensitive Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Council (BTAC) region and falls under the jurisdiction of the Kokrajhar police station.

Soon after the incident, ABMSU supporters took to the streets raising slogans against the BJP government in the state and blocked roads.

Condemning the incident, Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal asked the Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay to reach Kokrajhar and oversee the police investigation. "I strongly condemn the killing of ABMSU president Lafikul Islam. Directed Assam police DGP to visit Kokrajhar and do a thorough investigation," the chief minister tweeted.

Himanta Biswasarma, Assam Finance Minister expressed his condolences to the kin of the deceased and tweeted, "I am deeply distressed to learn about the killing of ABMSU president Lafikul Islam and strongly condemn it. My condolences to the family."

While the ABMSU has called for an indefinite strike in the BTAC area, All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) has called for a 24-hour bandh.
