Assam floods: Death toll rises to 39, several areas remain critical

The death toll in Assam floods have touched 39 with the situation in several parts remaining critical.

According to the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ADMA), 24 out of the state's 33 districts have been affected by the latest deluge.

The Brahmaputra river continues to flow above the danger mark in Jorhat, Sonitpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri.

Other smaller rivers like Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Kopili, Beki and Kushiyara are also flowing above the danger mark.

Barpeta, Dhubri, Nagaon, Kamrup, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur,Goalpara, Jorhat and Dibrugarh are the worst affected with 2970 villages inundated across the state.

More than 33 lakh people have been affected with the 1.38 lakh taking shelter across 869 relief camps and shelters.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is assisting the state administration in rescuing those stranded in Dhemaji, Biswanath, Bongaigaon and Nagaon.

The army too has been called in while the Air Force has been put on standby for rescue operations and air dropping relief material in areas that are inaccessible.

The ADMA states that more than forty thousand people have been evacuated from 25 districts by the state with the help of NDRF and army till Tuesday.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Assam to take stock of the flood situation and had announced a relief package of Rs 2,350 crore for North East.

He had also met chief ministers of other affected states like Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
