Amit gill, a resident of Mumbai, was produced before the Esplanade Court on charges of placing bets on India Vs Sri Lanka cricket series. Public prosecutor Rajendra Suryavanshi asked for police custody of the accused as they said that "Crime branch was yet to find out if he was placing the bets or taking it." The investigation of the bookies by crime branch had led them to a few recorded conversations between a few people regarding the placing of bets. The crime branch needed Gill's custody to take his voice samples so that it can be established whether it is his voice in any of the conversations.

However his custody was vehemently opposed by Gill's advocate Niranjan Mundargi. He said, "by their own admission the crime branch is saying that he was placing bets. Gambling is a bailable offence. He should be granted bail. Let the crime branch show the non-bailable charges on him. Those charges are on the other accused who were arrested earlier."

The other three accused arrested in the case earlier had also procured phones and sim cards on forged documents . Gill has also been booked under sections of forgery and cheating. Thus Mundargi argued, "I contact someone and that person has forged documents and cheated then how can I be arrested for this?"

Gill, who had been arrested by crime branch on Tuesday, was however sent to police custody by the magistrate court. Crime branch officials said that Gill was actor Arjun Rampal's brother-in-law. They confirmed that Gill was Rampal's relative.

However, on way his back to crime branch in police custody Gill said that he knows Rampal on a social level but denied being his relative. He said, "If you want to malign him then go ahead. But am not related. My surname is Gill and he is Rampal."
