Sexual assault angle to brutal attack on Delhi journalist Aparna Kalra

Delhi Police has identified a 22-year-old youth who was planning to sexually assault the 45-year-old freelance journalist Aparna Kalra at a park in Delhi where she was brutally attacked.

According to reports, three youths were drinking at a popular park in Ashok Vihar to which Kalra objected.

What followed was a brutal attack on her with stones leading to serious injuries on her head.

Kalra was taken to Fortis Hospital where she underwent an emergency cranial surgery as she was bleeding profusely from the scalp.

"A CT scan was conducted which showed multiple fracture, huge blood clot in her scalp, which could have proved fatal. A part of her scalp had to be removed. She is currently stable and still in the ICU as cranial surgery cases need to bemonitored," her doctor told PTI.

"She has sustained severe injuries to her brain and skull. She was hit with iron rods and parts of her skull have been reduced to powder," said her uncle H C Bhatia, adding, the doctors have asked the family to wait and watch.

"She had gone for an evening walk to the park which takes two minutes to reach from her home. She would leave around 6-6.15 PM everyday and return around 7 PM, before it gets dark," he said.

The journalist has been employed with leading dailies and was freelancing for the last year or so.
