In Short

  • Swamy alleged that Karti Chidambaram and his father were the chief conspirators in Aircel-Maxis deal.
  • After the BJP leader's allegation, Karti Chidambaram took to Twitter to rubbish these allegations.
  • Swamy accused CBI, ED of going easy on cases related to P Chidambaram and his son.

In what can be termed as one of the sharpest attacks on PM Modi's government by someone from the same party, senior leader Subramanian Swamy accused the Central Bureau of Investigation, Enforcement Directorate and top bureaucrats in finance ministry of going easy on cases related to former Finance Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram.

Swamy alleged that Karti Chidambaram and his father were the chief conspirators in Aircel-Maxis deal in which Maran brothers are accused of wrongdoing. Swamy went on saying, "Karti in an election affidavit said he doesn't have a single foreign bank account. But I am producing a list of his off-shore interests. I am sending all these copies to the prime minister. I want that he orders an inquiry into it. Our party's credibility needs to be protected."

After the BJP leader's allegation, Karti Chidambaram took to Twitter to rubbish these allegations which he called 'outrageous'. Karti tweeted, "Some outrageous claims have been made about me. My filings are up to date and completely in compliance with regulatory/statutory requirements. My family's and my assets are duly reflected in our IT filings. My companies have made all declarations as required by statutory requirements."

The larger question about the latest allegation remains whether it is just Chidambaram that Swamy is hitting at or is he also hitting out at Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, with whom he shares a very acrimonious relationship or Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is at the helm of affairs?

Swamy clearing the air said, "Prime Minister Modi is busy with so much work at his disposal. He has always been very cooperative whenever I have written to him." But in a letter Dated February 16 to the prime minister, Swamy alleged, "Pressure has been exerted by friends of Chidambaram in the finance ministry."

The BJP hasn't reacted on this allegation so far. Swamy held this press conference at the Constitution Club and not at party headquarter, which goes on to show the party in no way endorses his views.
