A major clash broke out on June 30, as miscreants, taking advantage of the protest, attacked few villagers, ONGC officials and the cops.

Haystacks were set on fire and police lathi charged, leaving many injured.

Speaking about the violence, chief minister E Palaniswamy said that local public did not allow the villagers to reach the spot.

"Certain miscreants burnt haystack and caused ruckus and due to that minor lathi charge was resorted to," E Palaniswamy said justifying the lathi charge.

DMK leader MK Stalin condemned the chief minister's comment, "Claiming that normalcy has returned to Kathiramangalam is a way to cover the atrocity conducted there."

MK Stalin also urged the government to retract the cases filed against the protesters.

Though Stalin spoke on the issue in the evening, DMK did not seem to have given much importance to the Kathiramangalam issue in the Assembly as they staged a walkout for the third time on the 'Gutka scam'.Also Read
