Aadhaar to be linked with Driving Licence in government's next push

Though the Supreme Court is yet to rule on whether or not Aadhaar violates privacy of citizens, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today said the government is now planning to link the unique identification number with Driving Licence.

"We are planning to link Driving Licence to Aadhaar . I have had a word with (Transport Minister Nitin) Gadkari ji regarding this," Prasad said at the Digital Haryana Summit 2017.

Prasad said Aadhaar is a "digital identity, not a physical identity". "Digital identity confirms physical identity," he added.

"We linked PAN (Permanent Account Number) card to Aadhaar to stop money laundering," he said.

The government's move to make Aadhaar mandatory for over 30 government schemes has been challenged in the Supreme Court, which is expected to deliver its verdict in November.

Earlier this week, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said he is confident that the Aadhaar law will pass the test of constitutionality, saying the legislation has adequate safeguards for data protection.
