It's war in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 and BJP party president Amit Shah is making no bones about it. Knowing fully well, apart from experiencing it in 2014, Shah knows that all roads to Delhi go via Uttar Pradesh and this is why he is leaving no stone unturned in winning a state which has been out of grasp of the BJP for the last 15 years.

BJP goes digital

Apart from spending considerable time stitching a favorable caste coalition to help BJP sail through in UP, party president is also going to make sure that efforts of all its leaders and workers are accounted for and nobody slips through the cracks. Attendance card equipped with radio-frequency chips will make Shah's task easier.

In an effort to account for all the hours put in by leaders as well as workers, these attendance cards will help the party bosses get real time data on how much time a leader and worker is putting in for party work.

According to a UP BJP leader, 'one of the reason why this is being done is the lackadaisical attitude which has set in the leaders of the state BJP. Being out of power for so long has also affected their working style. This attendance card will force many to shed their lethargic attitude".

The online matrix system will become operational by July end. In the first phase, nearly 1800 office bearer at the division level will go online. Once this is made operational and its performance assessed, in the next phase around 1.25 lakh workers, who have been assigned to supervise or man booths in election by state headquarter, will be joining the division level office bearers.

Not only will this, the new electronic cards which are tagged with unique number, give party office bearers and workers, online access to Modi government policies but also to library, and other party document.

Ushering in transparency

The central leadership feels that this exercise will also help in ushering in a culture of transparency where even a party worker will be able to gain access to party decisions. This is why most of the reports by senior leaders, along with the details and minutes of the meeting, will be posted here and it will be subjected to scrutiny not only at the central level but also by party workers. Party feel that it will also help them gain valuable inputs by the workers who are on the ground and it will help the party a lot.

The party feels that this "GPS" will also help party leadership to get a better grip of the party as the party president Amit Shah is not novice to the working of the UP BJP. Amit Shah was in charge of the UP during the crucial 2014 general election and he has firsthand understanding of the dynamics which make politics in UP tick.
