There will not be a repeat of 2006 when the V S Achuthanandan-government launched a demolition drive against illegal resorts. According to sources, the government will also not take over the illegally constructed buildings.

The party has now taken a stand that it will not allow illegal constructions and sand and stone mining in the region. The Revenue Department has given a directive in this regard to the concerned authorities.

However, the local CPM and CPI workers have raised voice of discontent against the Revenue Department’s move. It is in this juncture that the state CPI leadership decided not to take up harsh steps against the illegal resorts.

At present, constructions in Munnar need special permission from the Revenue Department. This decision was based on a court order. The Sub-Collector is not giving sanction for any structures other than houses and small shops and the government also maintains the same stance.

Sub-Collector Sreeram Venkitaraman had earlier seized vehicles and construction equipment from many illegal construction sites.

The Revenue Department wants a special squad under the Collector to prevent encroachments in Munnar. The special squad can be formed from the police force. The Home Department has not approved this recommendation of the Revenue Department so far.
