Alappuzha: ATMs will no longer give you just cash; there will soon be an ATM that provides milk, that too a moving one!
The advanced system, ATM (Any Time Milk), will be part of Hi-tech Dairy to be inaugurated by Agriculture Minister V S Sunilkumar at Thiruvanvandoor on Thursday.
According to T V Anilkumar, MD of the institution, it is for the first time that such a system is implemented in the dairy sector in the state. By using it, one can collect the required amount of milk after swiping a card on the milk vending machine installed on a vehicle. The card can be recharged.
The vehicles carries a tank with the capacity of 300 litres. The milk distribution will be confined to Tiruvalla and surrounding regions in the initial phase.
The dairy unit has 270 cows currently. The cattle is kept in an open shed instead of tying them up. They can eat food, drink water, and take rest as they wish. It has been found that the cows give more milk in such living conditions. There are also showers and hoses to bathe them. The cows are milked after they are bathed.
The number of cows will soon be increased to 500. At the milking parlour, there are facilities to milk 12 cows at the same time. The cows belong to Jersey, HF kinds which give an average of 20 litres of milk daily.
The milk will instantly reach the refrigerator through tubes and from there to the vending machines. A special feature of this system is that no chemical preservatives are added to the milk other than refrigerate it. German technology is used in the system, said Anilkumar.
Ambadi Dairy, which began functioning in 2006 with just two cows, has now been developed into this hi-tech dairy. An amount of Rs 4.5 crore has been spent for the purpose.
